“AC” Christopherson Leads Governors to Big Win Over Mitchell
September 13, 2013 1 Comment
Austin “AC” Christopherson had a huge night for the Governors as Pierre defeated previously unbeaten Mitchell 48-7 in their season home opener. The battle between #1 ranked Pierre and #2 ranked Mitchell leaves Pierre as the only unbeaten team and undisputed #1 in Class 11AA in South Dakota. The Governors 3-0 record is their best start to a season since 2005.
On the opening play of the game, Christopherson took the Mitchell kickoff at his own 4 yard line and sprinted down the left sideline for a 96-yard touchdown and Pierre led 7-0. Pierre held Mitchell on downs and on the ensuing punt, Christopherson again broke loose to score on a 41-yard punt return touchdown and the Governors were up 14-0 before their offense even took the field. Christopherson is the first Governor is history to return both a punt and kickoff for a touchdown in the same game. The Governors kept up the pressure in the first quarter leading to an Alex Gray 7-yard run for another touchdown and a 21-0 lead for the home team at the end of the first quarter.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as Jace Jerome broke free for an 11-yard rushing touchdown. Luke Snyder’s interception of a Mitchell pass on the first play of their next possession gave the Governors the ball on the Mitchell 19-yard line. Gray romped in from 17 yards out and the half ended with Pierre holding an insurmountable 34-0 lead.
Mitchell got their only points of the game early in the third quarter, scoring on a 26-yard pass play to make the score 34-7. Pierre’s big play offense then struck for a 50-yard touchdown pass from Gray to Shay Reinke. The Governor’s final points on the night came when backup quarterback Brevin Kaiser scored from 12 yards out. The two point conversion by Connor Shoop made the final score 48-7.
Jerome led the Governors rushing attack with 148 yards on 18 carries. Gray had his third straight solid game passing with 161 yards. Reinke led the receivers with 98 receiving yards.
Next week Pierre travels to Sioux Falls to face perennial power O’Gorman for their homecoming game. O’Gorman is 2-1 following their Dakota Bowl victory 28-10 over Washington, with their only loss coming to #1 11AAA rated Sioux Falls Lincoln.
